"Fantastic Theater at Cape May! Highly recommend. We saw A Year in the Trenches, a new play about WW I. Excellent. Wonderfully professional talented artists portrayed various roles. Intimate theater; easy to get pulled in emotionally into the story. This was a new show; very compelling."

A world premiere in 2017, A Year in the Trenches returns due to popular demand.  Meet Charles Edward Dilkes (1887-1968), poet Joyce Kilmer (1886-1918), pilot Kenneth Russell Unger (1898-1979), nurse Amabel Scharff Roberts (1891-1918), “Hello Girl” Grace Banker (1892-1960) and other Americans who went to Europe when the United Stated entered World War I a hundred years ago.  Dilkes was born in Philadelphia, but spent the rest of his life in New Jersey after the war. Written by James Rana, and developed with and directed by Gayle Stahlhuth, A Year in the Trenches is based on Dilkes’ book Remembering World War I: An Engineer's Diary of the War, and other historical sources.  A cast of six portray a variety of soldiers and civilians from France, Germany, and the United States.  Live music from the period is performed throughout.

This new work was commissioned by the New Jersey Historical Commission and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Staged readings of a shorter version of the play have been performed at The Bickford Theatre in Morristown, NJ, Toms River Public Library, McGuire Air Force Base/Fort Dix to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Fort Dix, Ocean County College Theater (2 shows for grades 4-8), and the NJ State Museum in Trenton.
